Download PDF or read online A Guide to the Birds of Colombia Book by Steven L. Hilty and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Describing all of Colombia's birds, Steven Hilty and William Brown bring together information on one of the world's largest avifaunas-nearly 1,700 species. Over half of all the species of birds in South America are included, thus making the book useful in regions adjacent to Colombia, as well as in the country itself. The primary purpose of the work is to enable observers to identify the birds of the region, but it also provides detailed species accounts and will serve as an important handbook and reference volume. Fifty-six lavish color plates, thirteen halftone plates, and ninety-nine line drawings in the text illustrate over 85% of the species, including most of the resident birds. Notes on the facing-page of each place, and range maps of 1,475 species, facilitate identification. Written with the field observer in mind, the text gives special attention to comparisons of similar species, transcriptions of voices, and comments on behavior, status, and habitat. It also provides ranges, breeding data, and references. Notes outline taxonomic problems and briefly describe species that eventually may be found in Colombia. Introductory chapters and photographs highlight Colombia's geography, climate, and vegetation, and discuss migration and conservation questions, and the history of Colombian ornithology. Appendices contain a large bibliography, a section on birding locations, and coverage of two of Colombia's far-flung island territories, Isla San Andr s and Providencia. Maps depicting vegetation zones, political boundaries, national parks, and the most text localities are included.

The Alpine landscape that so entranced Thomas Cook's pioneering group of package tourists in 1863 still draws tourists in their millions. Whether you're looking to check out the 365 days-per-year snowboarding scene in Zermatt, wander the medieval streets of exceptionally preserved Bern or sleep on the straw in a Valais farm, you'll find plenty of insight and advice from our team of expert authors. Beyond the hinterlands, we uncover the surprisingly dynamic alternative scene in Switzerland's cities, its cutting-edge contemporary galleries and myriad film, music and design festivals, not to mention the scientists at CERN attempting to discover the neutron-sized building-blocks of our universe in the world's biggest experiment. Make the most of your trip with The Rough Guide to Switzerland.

Libby Larsen

Page : 352 pages
Rating : 4.0/5 (997 users)

Download PDF or read online Libby Larsen Book by Denise Von Glahn and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Libby Larsen has composed award-winning music performed around the world. Her works range from chamber pieces and song cycles to operas to large-scale works for orchestra and chorus. At the same time, she has advocated for living composers and new music since cofounding the American Composers Forum in 1973. Denise Von Glahn 's in-depth examination of Larsen merges traditional biography with a daring scholarly foray: an ethnography of one active artist. Drawing on musical analysis, the composer 's personal archive, and seven years of interviews with Larsen and those in her orbit, Von Glahn illuminates the polyphony of achievements that make up Larsen 's public and private lives. In considering Larsen 's musical impact, Von Glahn delves into how elements of the personal ”a 1950s childhood, spiritual seeking, love of nature, and status as an important woman artist ”inform her work. The result is a portrait of a musical pathfinder who continues to defy expectations and reject labels.
