Book excerpt/synopsis : From Essence bestselling author Curtis Bunn comes a moving novel about a down and out corporate executive whose unexpected encounter with a stranger inspires her to reinvent her life. Brenda Harris, a former corporate executive in Atlanta, has endured two years of personal tragedies and professional disappointments, and believes the world owes her a break. One day, she encounters a homeless man who encourages her to look at life differently. She regularly sees this man at one of her daily stops. But she does not realize that he has been closely observing her and, despite his mental illness, is able to forge a deep connection with her in ways that both surprise and inspire her. She realizes there is a whole world out there for her to experience, and Rodney Bridges, the homeless man, helps her begin her journey of self-discovery by challenging her on their daily walks. The path is difficult, but her time with Rodney opens her up to a new world, a world she had dismissed when she lost her job, her husband left her, and her dear sister died. Part of her journey moves her to help Rodney. Through meaningful conversation and dedication, she is able to penetrate the emotional wall Rodney built after his own tragic circumstances sent him onto the streets. They become an unlikely duo--encouraging each other to overcome each of their own obstacles...and slowly a new world emerges. A moving and powerful story about how inspiration can be found in the unlikeliest places, Welcome to My World also reaffirms that the simplest things in life--a conversation with a stranger--can lead to life-changing results.

Book excerpt/synopsis : This book is in part a story about my extraordinary mindset during my trials and tribulations as a child, and during my self-perceived failures and successes as an adult, athlete and entrepreneur. The book starts by telling the story about my often turbulent childhood before I started practicing martial arts. It proceeds by giving a detailed description of my successful professional Muay Thai boxing and Shidokan karate career spanning over a period of twenty years, and how the effects of my childhood benefited me during my entire career as a fighter and as an adult. The book ends with a self-analysis on how my childhood and my sports career shaped me to become the man that I am today.

Book excerpt/synopsis : Time and world in the current global village concern everybody and everyone, whether young or old must pay at least some attention to correctly gauge the 'prevailing winds' blowing in and around the world at that time. The complex nature of the time and the world is very difficult to untangle and hopelessly mired in depths we may not know or things of which we have got no comprehension. In this book, I have tried to summarize events, situations, personalities, and at occasions, a few stories that bring deeper comprehension of the world and its affairs in the larger canvas of the political and cultural dynamics of the time and their interplays as I see them in moving the world forward. The topics on which I wrote were all topics on which I felt rather strongly about or topics that I felt important. I hope they are enjoyed and appreciated by all those who read them. While writing the book, I was often tempted to add my own comments about what I felt about the issue at hand, but in the end I successfully resisted such temptations and restricted myself to the truth as I saw it. So this book is a publication on world affairs with just occasional comments of universal nature here and there.Another problem I encountered while writing this book was the abundance of materials to select from. Several events of recent origin raced through my mind for space, but I had to be choosy to limit myself to the planned format of my book. Further, recent developments are too recent and hot to gauge dispassionately and earn space for objective analyses. Therefore, I avoided such materials as much as possible in this volume. This holds true about India also. Though this book is India-centric in world affairs, I avoided all opinions and comments on India related matters for the fear of being partisan. This volume is not planned as a platform for such contents. Nec Dextrorsum, Nec Sinistrorsum is the theme here and I tried my best to maintain it.Often, I had been tempted to stray into topics quite unrelated to the theme of the book. Managing it and keeping my course on the track was the toughest part of my work. "My Time, My World" opened up limitless vista for entry. Again, I succeeded in confining myself to my Lakshmana Rekha.

Book excerpt/synopsis : Battered and psychologically abused by an alcoholic father and neglected by an equally abused mother, Michael, age seven, descended into rage at the murder of his beloved pet rooster and the death of his adored sister. Consumed by murderous hate, Michael was exiled to an obscure monastery between China and Tibet in the back of beyond, from a place it was assumed he would never return. A very special Buddhist monk,Kako, made it his life's work to reclaim the wreck that was this belligerent boy. It took Kako eleven years to transform Michael into the man of peace and charity he is today. The path was difficult and often seemed impossible as Michael resisted all of Kako's patient teaching. Michaels transformation was aided by a handwoven soccer ball made from bamboo and coconut skin and a team of young monks who played a game they had never seen before in their lives. By the time Kako passed away at the age of forty-four, Michael was ready to return to a world that had long ago forgotten him. Shinawa: The Story of a Reclaimed Life is the remarkable story of the long and difficult path to Michael's transformation.

I doubted the existence of the woman of my dreams when I started to write my second book. I doubted her existence because of how cruel the rest of the world could be to someone with social anxiety. I thought my years of being bullied were over before the writing of my second book. Then the bullying started all over again after I was somehow able to find the courage to let one of my angels know how I felt about her. This vilification led me into another pit of darkness. It had me believing it was wrong to love beautiful women. Yet my love for beautiful women was also the only thing to keep me alive.

Book excerpt/synopsis : There are twelve timebands in the universe. Each timeband is a cybernetic device that gives the wearer the ability to command time. With a timeband, you can travel to the past or the future, speed time up, slow it down, or cause time to stop entirely. You have the ability to change history and create worlds that never were, both awe-inspiring and frightening. You can see the bleak destiny humanity is heading toward, or steer it toward a bright, glorious future. Ruthie McDonald was working in a Chicago diner on the day the bomb exploded. She had no idea what would happen when she took the timeband off the arm of the dead man and fastened it to her own arm. But that moment changed her life forever. Her world vanished, and a darker, scarier one took its place. For better or worse, she was now a time traveler, a member of a secret elite team responsible for the safety of the entire timeline of the world's history.

Download PDF or read online In the Shadow of Death Book by Elizabeth Beck and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : The press called Martin's actions a "crime spree." Already convicted of armed robbery, Martin was facing the death penalty. In less than two weeks the jury would decide his fate. Terrified that his son would be sentenced to die, Phillip did the only thing he felt he could do: in an act of faith and desperation in his garage with the car exhaust running, Phillip made the consummate sacrifice to spare his son the ultimate punishment. Ironically, his suicide presented Martin's with another chance at life; the jury, moved by Martin's loss, spared his life. Phillip's story-like those of the other parents, siblings, children, and cousins chronicled in this book-vividly illustrates the precarious position family members of capital offenders occupy in the criminal justice system. At once outsiders and victims, they live in the shadow of death, crushed by trauma, grief, and helplessness. In this penetrating account of guilt and innocence, shame and triumph, devastating loss and ultimate redemption, the voices of these family members add a new dimension to debates about capital punishment and how communities can prevent and address crime. Restorative justice theory, which views violent crime as an extreme violation of relationships; searches for ways to hold offenders accountable; and meets the needs of victims and communities torn apart by the crime, organizes these narratives and integrates offenders' families into the process of transforming conflict and promoting justice and healing for all. What emerges from hundreds of hours' worth of in-depth interviews with family members of offenders and victims, legal teams, and leaders in the abolition and restorative justice movements is a vision of justice strongly rooted in the social fabric of communities. Showing that forgiveness and recovery are possible in the wake of even the most heinous crimes, while holding victims' stories sacred, this eye-opening book bridges the pain of living in the shadow of death with the possibility of a reparative form of justice. Anyone working with victims, offenders, and their families-from lawyers and social workers to mediators and activists-will find this riveting work indispensable to their efforts.
