Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : This Ebook is a collection of poems selected from 40 years of writing. The science of poetry is to translate the intangible thinking of the right brain into a familiar left brain world of matter. No attempt has been made to order the poems, either alphabetically or chronologically or by themes, in the hope that each poem will come as a surprise and maintain interest. There are a number of poems on the subject of language throughout the book. To understand some of them, it may be necessary to have an awareness of the thought behind them. The author is passionately interested in how the presence of language influences the process of thought. Did, for instance, early societies before language, see their world as one? Does the existence of over a million words, a million labels, in our contemporary world, tend to make us think fractionally? These poems are the tangibles of philosophies that have entered my mind over the past 92 years, and the many issues that all lives have to deal with. They are namely...an autobiography of thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Conversations with Graham Swift is the first collection of interviews conducted with the author of the Booker Prize–winning novel Last Orders. Beginning in 1985 with Swift’s arrival in New York to promote Waterland and concluding with an interview from 2016 that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, the collection spans Swift’s more than thirty-five-year career as a writer. The volume also includes interviews first printed in English as well as translated from the French or Spanish and covers a wide range of formats, from lengthier interviews published in standard academic journals, to those for radio, newspapers, and, more recently, podcasts. In these interviews, Graham Swift (b. 1949) offers insights into his life and career, including his friendships with other contemporary writers like Ted Hughes and the group of celebrated novelists who emerged in Britain during the eighties. With remarkable clarity, Swift discusses the themes of his novels and short stories: death, love, history, parent-child relationships, the power of the imagination, the role of storytelling, and the consequences of knowing. He also notes the influences, literary and personal, that have helped shape his writing career. While quite ordinary in his life and daily habits, Swift reveals his penetrating intellect and rich imagination—an imagination that can craft some of the most engaging and formally complex stories in the language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : This book argues that there are deep connections between ‘poetic’ thinking and the sensitive recognition of creaturely others. It explores this proposition in relation to four poets: Marianne Moore, Elizabeth Bishop, Ted Hughes, and Les Murray. Through a series of close readings, and by paying close attention to issues of sound, rhythm, simile, metaphor, and image, it explores how poetry cultivates a special openness towards animal others. The thinking behind this book is inspired by J. M. Coetzee’s The Lives of Animals. In particular, it takes up that book’s suggestion that poetry invites us to relate to animals in an open-ended and sympathetic manner. Poets, according to Elizabeth Costello, the book’s protagonist, ‘return the living, electric being to language’, and, doing so, compel us to open our hearts towards animals and the claims they make upon us. There are special affinities, for her, between the music of poetry and the recognition of others. But what might it mean to say that poets to return life to language? And why might this have any bearing on our relationship with animals? Beyond offering many suggestive starting points, Elizabeth Costello says very little about the nature of poetry’s special relationship with the animal; one aim of this study, then, is to ask of what this relationship consists, not least by examining the various ways poets have bodied forth animals in language.

Book excerpt/synopsis : Aurora Leigh (1856), Elizabeth Barrett Browning's epic novel in blank verse, tells the story of the making of a woman poet, exploring 'the woman question', art and its relation to politics and social oppression. The texts in this selection are based in the main on the earliest printed versions of the poems. What Edgar Allan Poe called 'her wild and magnificent genius' is abundantly in evidence. In addition to Aurora Leigh, this volume contains poetry from the several volumes of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's published poetry from 1826 to 1862, including Casa Guidi Windows (1851), Songs for the Ragged Schools of London (1854) and the British Library manuscript text of the 'Sonnets from the Portuguese' (1846) which records her courtship with Robert Browning.
